Closed-cir­cuit tele­vi­sion (CCTV) tech­nol­o­gy was invent­ed in 1942. At first, it was most­ly used to mon­i­tor rock­et launch­es rather than for home secu­ri­ty. 

It was not until 1969 that Marie Van Brit­tain, the inven­tor, patent­ed a video-based home secu­ri­ty sys­tem. This sys­tem became more pop­u­lar dur­ing the 1980s when it became less expen­sive and more acces­si­ble.

The Digital Revolution

Home secu­ri­ty sig­nif­i­cant­ly advanced thanks to the intro­duc­tion of dig­i­tal tech­nol­o­gy in the 1990s. Dig­i­tal video recorders (DVRs) replaced VCRs, allow­ing for more effi­cient stor­age, retrieval, and play­back of sur­veil­lance footage.

Even­tu­al­ly, wired devices were phased out, as the release of wire­less sen­sors that could com­mu­ni­cate via Blue­tooth elim­i­nat­ed the need for exten­sive cabling and place­ment lim­i­ta­tions.

In addi­tion, the devel­op­ment of cloud stor­age allowed secu­ri­ty footage to be stored off-site, allow­ing users to back up their data and remote­ly access it from any­where with an inter­net con­nec­tion.
