Beware of Dog Sign
Even if you don’t have a dog, you can pretend using this sign. Having a dog doesn’t necessarily make your home safer but it does make it less approachable by burglars. No burglar wants to have an encounter with a dog during a robbery that they’ll think twice about entering.
If you’re going to be out of your house for a few days, get yourself one of these. A timer for your lights allows you to create an illusion that you’re home by turning your lights on and off at pre-set timings. This illusion will keep intruders out, getting them to think that someone is home.
Keep the Mail Coming
Don’t suspend your mail or newspaper deliver if you’ll be out of your house for a few weeks. Instead, get family or a trusted neighbour to collect your mail for you. You don’t want to give anyone the sign that you’re not home.
Change Your Routine
Try not to make your daily routine predictable that anyone can quickly catch onto. Occasionally change it up. Try leaving and returning home at different times.
Make sure all garden tools and any other objects that could be used to break into your home are stored away. Leaving these around is like giving a burglar the key to your house. Don’t give them anything they can use to get in.
Water your Plants
If you’re gone during the summer, get someone to water your plants. Making your house look lived in from the outside gives the impression that someone is home on the inside.
Keep The Sign on the Lawn
If you have a security system, keep the sign on your lawn or in your window. It’s your best defense. You take away the sign, you take away your defense.
