Naturally, people are much more relaxed during the summer months. There are far more crimes taking place during the summer than any other time of year, and families will be much more likely to leave doors and windows open so that the fresh air can circulate easier.

Burglaries can happen at any given moment and to anybody, which is why it is important to take extra security measures, especially once the weather starts warming up.

Think like a Burglar

Take the time to go outside of your home and find the areas where burglars might be able to gain access to your home. The most common place for a burglar to enter your home would be through a window. Make sure that your windows are locked even if they are on the second floor. If you have a ladder left outside, make sure that it is put into a shed or somewhere inside of your home.

Hide your Spare Keys Creatively

Burglars are opportunists, they will use whatever means necessary to break into your home. Burglars are more likely to enter through windows that are covered by shrubs or trees because it makes it easier to hide from neighbors so never leave these areas unchecked. If you have a spare key outside, do not place it in an obvious location.

Where to Invest your Trust

If you are a new resident of your town, you might want to start building relationships with your new neighbors. Until you really get to know the people in your neighborhood, don’t invest your trust into anyone other than your family. Consider installing exterior lighting. The last thing a burglar wants is to have their criminal actions exposed and that’s exactly the purpose of motion sensor lighting.

Keep your Social Shares to a Minimum

Avoid posting your whereabouts on social media. If you advertise online that you will be away from your home, criminals will be more likely to attempt a break-in. Talk about your vacation after you have already returned home, otherwise, you might come home to find you have been robbed.

Install a Security System and Monitor it on your Phone when Possible

Make sure to take advantage of the home monitoring apps on your smart phone. If you have a security system installed in your home then consider adding cameras as well so you can observe live video feed from your home to your phone. If you do not have a security system installed in your home, ask a friend or family member to keep a close watch on your home while you are away.
